For over 5 years we’ve been striving for more green in cities. This year we see it really picking up. Bottom-up initiatives have traction; more and more corporates and investors are looking for ways to adapt more green; green companies look for innovative ways to meet changing market demands. 

We are working on a new local economy. We develop new concepts and businesses that challenge the old economy. By competing on other values than just financial.

To kick-off an innovation process, we’ve opened the minds of people with an inspiration session.

We hold a strong expertise in the values of flora and fauna.

BDA was growing and this set the agency for a fundamental choice: growing further independently or co-operate with another agency. We wanted to scale faster and work an a system level to have more impact on biodiversity and climate adaptation. Knowledge and drive were there; network and back-up insufficiently. 

In Rebel we've found a good match. Rebel is a strategy and financial consultancy, with more than 250 consultants, international presence, headquartered in Rotterdam. Rebels are entrepreneurial consultants and it roughly consists of a holding with several different ventures, each with their own expertise. Jan Coen van Elburg (founder and managing partner of Rebel Energy) and Mark Bode together founded Rebel Flora & Fauna. We have an international focus on another economic narrative where economy and ecology go hand in hand to improve biodiversity and climate adaptation.

For IVN nature education, Business Design Agency is asked to take a seat in the core team that takes the lead in the program 'towards green, climate adaptive and future proof working landscapes'. Our role is to head the green sector with the innovation agenda and align it with the overall strategy of the application for  "Groeifonds".

Since years Rotterdam is undergoing a rapid transition towards a human and green place to be. How? By adjusting its planning practices to be able to accommodate this change, making use of tactical urbanism.

Years ago some clever planners at the municipality invented the bicycle parklets, to reduce on-street parking and provide more space for cyclists. Over the years it gained a lot of experience with tactical urbanism and parklets in particular. But they usually turned out to be expensive, difficult to manage and therefore impossible to scale up. The city asked local agency for urban change Humankind and Business Design Agency to come up with a solution.

With TreeCollective we help builders, planners, residents, developers and administrators to choose for trees. We think along about preservation and maintenance. And we make the benefits of trees tangible, testable and calculable. 

Together, we bring the city to life, tree by tree.

And how. A tree makes an essential and valuable contribution to our densely built-up environment. Because a tree is alive, and is actively working to improve the city - although you can't always tell from such a sturdy trunk.

The number and use of bicycles continues to increase in Dutch cities (luckily so). In densely populated areas bike parking becomes an issue. Space can be created by removing wrecks and abandoned bikes. And by reducing faulty parking. But how can you do this without incurring high costs for enforcement?
